Our Programs and Services

Inpatient treatment is available for alcohol and drug addiction, problem gambling, internet addiction, trauma along with mental health issues.

Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive and potentially fatal disease.

Environmental factors influence its development and manifestations. The following elements characterize the alcoholic on a continuous period of time:

  • loss of control over consumption of alcohol;
  • a concern about alcohol and its use despite harmful consequences;
  • distortion of thought manifested most often by denial or minimization.

Problems of abuse and alcohol dependence are serious and severe, affecting the individual in all spheres of its life: work, family, legal, social, physical, psychological, psychiatric, etc.. A specialized treatment, structured and adapted to the various specific conditions that the individual is suffering from, should be implemented in order to escape the clutches of addiction.

Before the start of each treatment, Nouveau Départ’s team carefully evaluates the consumption profile of the individual, the potential withdrawal the treatment presents, as well as various co -occurring conditions: physical, emotional and behavioural, as well as factors that may help or hinder rehabilitation.

This first evaluation is based on the severity of the addiction ( Addiction Severity Index) and is accompanied by a complete medical examination. Depending on the circumstances , the therapy can vary from a brief intervention to an intensive treatment under medical supervision.The levels of care are adapted to the conditions of the patient and various structures of therapeutic help are implemented.

Drug addiction is a physical and psychological dependence on one or more psychotropic substances without therapeutic justification.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), drug addiction is:

• an irrepressible desire to consume a psychoactive substance;
• a tendency to increase the dose;
• a psychological and physical dependence;
• and has adverse consequences on the daily life (economic, emotional, social, family, work, etc.).

By its medical approach, Nouveau Départ can sometimes employ pharmacotherapy in order to treat individuals suffering from addiction, both with acute withdrawal and during the post- weaning period (prolonged withdrawal or maintenance phase). Several drugs are approved for the treatment of addiction, including drugs that can reduce the craving for psychoactive substances. Furthermore , medication can be useful for treating physical complications, in addition to nutritional, psychiatric and neurological disorders. Finally, nearly 50% of the people treated for an addiction also have other coexisting psychiatric disorders (concurrent disorders ). The multidisciplinary team of Nouveau Départ has the ability to fully diagnose and provide specialized treatment to each individual.

Prescription drug addiction is most common with benzodiazepines (Valium, Ativan, Xanax, Rivotril and other sleep aids), barbiturates (Fiorinal and others), and opiates (Percodan, morphine, codeine, etc.).

These drugs are usually prescribed to alleviate acute or chronic anxiety, insomnia, or pain. Though these drugs are legal with a prescription, many are also available on the black market. As user’s tolerance increases over time, so does the dose they require, a process that can aggravate their addiction. Patients who decide to stop taking these drugs, often go into withdrawal, which can have very complex side effects and even cause death (as in the case of benzodiazepines).
In addition to teaching patients how to change their lifestyle to better control their anxiety, pain and insomnia, Nouveau Départ offers a fourfold treatment:

  • Provide the most comfortable withdrawal possible by eliminating physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms
  • Replace addictive drugs, where feasible, with other substances that can alleviate patient’s symptoms without causing dependency
  • Combine pharmacological treatment with alternative techniques that help mitigate symptoms (acupuncture, massage-therapy, relaxation, etc.)
  • Develop a healthy lifestyle (sleep habits, physical exercise, etc.)

At Nouveau Départ we are very sensitive to the manifold traumas people can suffer. Sexual abuse, accidents, the loss of loved ones, assaults, breakups, and other smaller traumas can all lead to chronic dysfunction in fragile individuals.

Nouveau Départ offers a variety of treatments for trauma that include medical and psychiatric assessment and traditional psychotherapy, as well as neuro-emotional and eye movement integration therapy. In eye movement therapy, patients dredge up their painful memories while a highly trained specialist interrupts at regular intervals, providing sensory stimulation that helps purge the negative emotions attached to these traumatic memories. Eye movement therapy works on the brain’s limbic system to neutralize the negative character of the trauma sufferer’s images, perceptions, and memories.

If the game takes up the money dedicated to financial obligations, if it replaces time spent with the family, if it becomes a pressing and pervasive need, it is pathological.

Gambling is a hidden problem that can not be detected by physical signs. No universal cause can explain the behavior of a compulsive gambler. Each player has its reasons for playing, but all seek to flee or to express a need or inner discomfort.

• 73.2 % of pathological gamblers have problems with alcohol.
• 38.1 % have problems with drug abuse.
• 49.6 % suffer from mood disorders.
• 60.8 % live with an anxiety disorder.
• 60.8 % have a personality disorder.

Adapted to the needs of gamblers, Nouveau Départ provides a medical evaluation to target not only gambling but also other associated problems (physical and mental health, financial problems, family, professional, legal, etc.) individual and group psychoeducation, therapeutic monitoring and follow-up aftercare.

Treatment plans respect the family and professional environment, while a biopsychosocial approach integrates medical, psychiatric, pharmacological and therapeutic aspects of the problem, while self-help groups of Gamblers Anonymous types are strongly recommended.

The World Health Organization (WHO) now recognizes Internet addiction. It is a serious condition that can create other physical, psychological, social, and even financial problems. People with an Internet addiction often suffer from other psychiatric difficulties or addictions as well.

Internet addiction can take a number of forms such as online sexual activities, relationships, gaming, compulsive Internet searching, and more.

From a treatment standpoint, Internet addiction can be approached much like other addictions. Even if there is no psychoactive substance to speak of, excessive Internet use does develop new neuronal circuits for pleasure, leading the user to increasingly take refuge in the virtual world. Internet addiction frequently manifests as virtual sexuality, isolating the patient and significantly impairing the ability to form real-world relationships.

When dealing with Internet addiction, it is important to properly measure the severity of the addiction, assess the personality type, and eliminate comorbid factors. This calls for an integrated cognitive and behavioural approach to support involving group therapies and pharmacotherapy. Specialized approaches are also available to treat cybersex issues.

Addiction is a primary, chronic, potentially fatal disease characterized by loss of control over use of psychoactive substances or other addictive behaviours. Though it is a complex condition that affects brain structure and behaviour, addiction can be treated.

Health professionals choose the best treatment using the placement criteria of the American or Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine and an in-depth multiaxial assessment. At Nouveau Départ, every newly admitted patient also completes a series of standardized psychometric tests. This comprehensive assessment enables us to design and implement a personalized treatment plan that addresses every facet of their lives.
